Local Artist of the Month: Sylvia Chan
May 29, 2016
Author: Addison

Professional artist and art educator Sylvia Chan is our latest Artist of the Month. For over a decade, Sylvia has been creating opportunities for people to get in touch with their inner artist. Sylvia believes that creativity and imagination are essential for guiding young people in acheiving the possibilities they want for themselves and their community.

Sylvia is the founder of the Paint A Smile, a not-for-profit program that provides art workshops for young people. The initiative aims to foster creativity and self-esteem while developing strong leadership skills. Alongside her community endeavors, Sylvia also continues her own personal artistic practice.

We had 6 paintings from Sylvia’ Origami series displayed in our office for the past 2 months. Each work combines the folding and creasing of lines to create painted origami animals. These lines contrast with carefree splashes of colour in a way that only Sylvia can perfect. Each distance and angle we viewed her paintings from provided a new understanding of depth, as the texture of the acrylic paint on the canvas added a neat element of dimension.

Similar to depth in her paintings, understanding Sylvia's’ driving passion for influencing young people reveals her true impact on inspiring the next generation of creators. Sylvia’s dedication to the community is what makes her stand out to us, and we are proud to have had her work brighten our space.

To see more of Sylvia’s work, follow her on Twitter and Instagram, and check out her website here.
